What the background you shoot on does
We placed 8 public product photos (two bottles, a beer mug, two cameras, trail shoes, a bag and a file set) on 3 backgrounds and ran all 24 through this chain, then compared each result with the same product put on white by hand. Against a forest path, 7 of 8 had under 3% of their pixels visibly different; in a busy street market the typical result had 13% wrong, and the shoe 29%, with parts of the stall kept and part of the shoe lost. A plain wall or table is worth the trouble.
Sizes and time
Every result came out 1080 × 1080 and under 500 KB, between 52 and 194 KB, and each photo took about 7 seconds on a fast laptop. The first photo also downloads the cut-out model once.
Check each one
A cut-out that went wrong is easy to see on white. For those, use Remove background on its own: it lets you paint back what was lost or erase what was left, and try a second model. Phones start with a smaller, lighter model, which we didn’t score here.
Your files stay with you
Every step runs on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you don’t need an account. Close the tab and the files are gone; only the list of steps is remembered, and only on this device.
From our tests
- Removing a background on your own device: how good is it on hair, glass and products?
Matte error on people, animals, glass and products for four free models that run without uploading.
- Batch-editing photos without uploading them: what we measured
Times, file sizes and failure handling for photo batches run on the device, laptop and iPhone-like.
