Which quality to pick
Around 75 is hard to tell apart from the original on a screen and usually cuts photos a lot. Go lower for thumbnails and email attachments; stay at 85 or above for anything you plan to print or edit again.
PNG files
PNG files start on Smaller file, which keeps up to 256 colours picked for each image; the quality slider sets how many. That is usually hard to tell apart on screenshots, logos and graphics, and it keeps see-through areas. Choose Every pixel exact when nothing may change, at a much smaller saving. For photos saved as PNG, switching to JPG or WebP still makes the biggest difference. If a file can’t get any smaller, you get the original picture back with its hidden data removed.
Your files stay with you
The images are processed on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you don’t need an account. Close the tab and they’re gone.
From our tests
- How to compress images for a website
Pixel counts versus bytes on a real photo, plus the screenshots that got bigger.
- Why your PNG won’t shrink, and what to save it as instead
Four PNGs saved five ways, and why screenshots should leave PNG behind.
