Check what the face finder missed
On six crew and team photos from NASA’s public archive, the finder marked 31 of the 33 faces we counted, four of them in side profile. The two it missed were a man turned sideways and one half hidden behind a screen. It also boxed five things that weren’t faces, like shoulder patches and a logo; take those off with the × under the picture. Small faces at the back of a crowd are the likeliest to be missed, so look over the whole photo before you save. Finding faces takes about 3 seconds a photo on a laptop, after a one-time download of about 12 MB.
Solid box, pixelate or blur
Use a solid box for number plates, names and any text. In our test, a list of 2,000 possible plates, each pixelated or blurred the same way, picked out the right plate 12 times out of 12 at every strength here, even where the plate had turned into a yellow smear. Blur and pixelation make a face less distracting in a photo you share; they don’t make it secret.
What the saved copy keeps
The saved photo is made from the edited pixels, so nothing under a solid box is left in the file. It also leaves without its camera details, location and the small preview picture that cameras and editing apps often tuck inside a photo (5 of our 17 test photos carried one), which would otherwise still show the unblurred scene.
