Restrictions are a request written into the file. Each reader app decides whether to honour it, and in our tests most didn’t. Only the open password keeps people out.

Nothing is uploaded. Write the password down: we never see it, so we can’t recover it for you.

Several steps, or a whole batch? Chain this with other tools in a Workflow and run them in one go.

What the password does

The open password encrypts every page, picture and font in the file with AES-256. Without it, none of the ten PDF readers we tried could show a page. Pick something long: the only way past AES-256 is guessing, and short passwords are guessed first.

Print and copy restrictions

Restrictions are stored in the file as a request, and each reader app decides whether to honour it. In our tests, most of the apps and libraries we tried ignored them. Use them as a polite sign, never as the thing that keeps a document private.

Keep your original

We never see your password, so we can’t reset it. Keep an unprotected copy somewhere safe, or write the password down.

Your files stay with you

Your PDFs are opened and saved on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you don’t need an account. Close the tab and they’re gone.
