Grid or carousel
Grid cuts the picture into equal pieces at full resolution. Instagram carousel first trims the picture so the tiles fit side by side, then saves each at 1080 pixels wide, square or 3:4 portrait, so a panorama swipes across as one picture.
Posting order
Pieces are numbered left to right, then top to bottom, and the file names in the zip keep that order. Instagram takes up to 20 photos in one post and uses one shape for all of them, which is why every tile comes out the same size.
Pieces that don’t divide evenly
When the width or height doesn’t split exactly, neighbouring pieces differ by one pixel at most. No pixel is lost or repeated.
