Why 3:4 and not 4:5
Instagram’s help page on photo resolution, read on 24 September 2026, gives the supported shapes as 1.91:1 to 3:4, which at 1080 pixels wide means a height from 566 to 1440. The familiar 4:5 portrait (1080 × 1350) is inside that range, but 3:4 is now the tallest a photo can be without Instagram cropping it, and it is the shape an upright phone photo already has.
What Instagram does to other sizes
A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution when its shape is in range. Wider photos are scaled down to 1080, narrower ones are enlarged to 320, and any shape outside the range is cropped to fit. Cropping here first means you choose what goes.
Posts with several photos
One post holds up to 20 photos, and the shape you choose applies to all of them. Add the whole set above and each photo gets its own box on the same shape. To cut one wide picture into swipeable tiles, use the image splitter.
