Where 1080 × 1920 comes from

We took it from Meta’s specification for Instagram Stories ads, which recommends 1080 × 1920 in a 9:16 shape, with 600 × 1067 as the smallest and JPG or PNG files up to 30 MB. We didn’t find a pixel size for ordinary stories on Instagram’s own help pages.

Reel covers can’t be changed later

Instagram recommends 420 × 654 pixels for a reel’s cover photo, a 1:1.55 shape, and says the cover can’t be edited after the reel is uploaded. Crop it before you post.
