Compress an animated GIF

Drop in a GIF and get a smaller one back, playing next to the original so you can judge it. If the same animation would be much smaller as WebP, you get that option too.

One GIF at a time. Nothing is uploaded.

Ignore small changes

Reuses more of each frame. Usually hard to spot; the biggest savings on photo GIFs.

Colours

The most a GIF can hold. Fewer colours make smaller files; photos start to band below 128.

Frames

Dropped frames’ time goes to the frame before, so it runs just as long. Motion gets choppier.

Size

Nothing is uploaded. Frame timing and the number of loops are kept.

Where the savings come from

Most GIFs redraw pixels that never change. This tool stores only what moves from one frame to the next, which alone took 11 to 34% off the screen recordings in our tests without changing a pixel. Ignore small changes goes further on photo GIFs: Medium took 22 to 83% off the photo loops we tried.

When WebP is the better answer

Saved as animated WebP, ten of our eleven test GIFs came out 45 to 84% smaller, with more than 256 colours. WebP plays in current web browsers and most chat apps; keep the GIF for places that only take GIF.

Very long GIFs

All frames are held in memory while you work. A long, large GIF is opened at a smaller size to fit, and the page tells you when that happened.

Nothing leaves your device

The pictures and videos are read and saved right here on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and there is no sign-up. Close the tab and they are gone.
