Make an image under 20 KB

Twenty kilobytes is a very tight limit. Every photo we tried, from a 13.8 MB camera shot to a 647 KB portrait, had to shrink to roughly 600 pixels across to fit.

What fits in 20 KB

Every one of our five test photos had to shrink: the 18-megapixel bridge photo to 671 by 419 pixels, the waterfall to 539 by 359, a portrait to 580 by 725, and two other photos at 675 and 599 pixels wide, each at quality 40 to 43. That is fine for a thumbnail or an ID photo shown small, and soft if anyone zooms in.

Crop first if you can

The limit covers the whole picture, so empty sky or background uses bytes your face or signature could have had. Crop to what matters before you compress, and the same 20 KB shows it larger.

Screenshots are slow here

Our 2880 by 1800 screenshot fit at 570 by 355 pixels with 96 colours, and finding that took 17 seconds, against under 3 seconds for each photo.
