Make an image under 1 MB

A 1 MB cap is the gentle one. Every photo we tried fit at its full width and height; only the quality came down, and even a 13.8 MB camera photo kept quality 61.

What 1 MB costs a photo

An 18-megapixel photo of the Golden Gate Bridge went from 13.8 MB to just under the limit at its full 5388 by 3368 pixels, quality 61. A 6-megapixel waterfall photo kept quality 81 and a 4.3-megapixel photo of people kept 90, which is hard to tell from the original on a screen. Images already well under the limit come back at quality 92.

When a form still says too big

This tool counts 1 MB as 1,024 KB, which is 1,048,576 bytes. Some forms mean 1,000,000 bytes, and our bridge photo, at 1,046,965 bytes, would fail those. If a file is refused, choose Custom under File size and type 950.

The details that come off

Every re-saved photo leaves without its camera details and GPS location. The picture looks the same; the hidden data is gone.

Your files stay with you
