Convert HEIF to JPG

HEIF is the photo format HEIC belongs to. Phones and cameras save it as .heif, .heic or .hif, and plenty of apps and upload forms still won’t open any of them. Add a batch and get JPG copies, made on your device.

HEIF, HEIC and HIF

HEIF is the container. HEIC is the name for HEIF files whose pictures are stored with the HEVC codec, which is what iPhones write, and files ending in .heif or .hif are usually the same kind of file under another name. This page opens all three. A HEIF file that uses the AV1 codec instead is an AVIF: use AVIF to JPG for those.

10-bit and HDR photos

Camera HEIF files often store 10 bits per colour. They are brought down to the 8 bits a JPG holds, which looks the same for viewing and sharing. Photos shot in an HDR mode (PQ or HLG) are not tone-mapped here, so they can come out flat or washed out; export those with the camera maker’s own software.

Where it was taken doesn’t come along

Phones and many cameras record where and when a photo was taken, and on which device. The JPG copies you download carry none of that. If you need the date the photo was taken, note it before you convert.

Only the main picture

A HEIF file can hold more than one image: a thumbnail, a depth map, a brightness layer for HDR screens, or a burst. Only the main picture is converted.

Your photos stay with you

The photos are converted on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you don’t need an account. Close the tab and they’re gone.
